SUMMARY:Computing Without Borders: Combining Cloud and HPC to Advance Expe
 rimental Science.
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\n\nComputing Without Borders: Combining Cloud and HPC
to Advance Experimental Science.\n\nBard\n\nComputing has always been par
t of experimental science, and is increasingly playing a central role in e
nabling scientific discovery. Technological advances are providing more po
werful supercomputers and super-efficient specialized chip architectures.
It is also advancing instrument technology, resulting in higher resolution
detectors that produce orders of magnitude more data and allow access to
exciting new scientific domains. \n\nThe scale of the compute needs of suc
h instruments is typically mixed, sometimes requiring cloud or small clust
er computing and sometimes requiring dedicated access to a supercomputer.
There is a vital dependence on how quickly the compute power can be availa
ble and how quickly the data can be transferred to the compute site, as ma
ny experiments require real-time data analysis. Using real-life examples f
rom high energy physics, microscopy and genomics, I will discuss how exper
imental science is taking advantage of both cloud and near-exascale HPC re
sources. I will outline some of the challenges we see in operating such wo
rkflows across multiple sites, with a focus on system responsiveness and d
ata management issues.\n\nTag: Workshop Reg Pass, Clouds and Distributed C
